Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Sampson's not long for Indiana

Note: I changed the title of this post after a reader correction.

So this is how it goes.

First it was Kelvin Sampson’s 577 impermissible phone calls made between 2000 and 2004 while coaching at Oklahoma.

Then Sampson violated telephone recruiting restrictions – brought on by those 577 calls – when he and assistant Rob Senderoff made approximately 100 impermissible phone calls to recruits. The school’s initial response contended those were secondary violations.

Now, it’s come out that Sampson lied about the violations to Indiana and the NCAA. In an NCAA report, Sampson is accused of five major violations and failed “to deport himself ... with the generally recognized high standard of honesty.”

(Click here for a timeline of the allegations and here for a pdf of the NCAA’s report.)

In short, the NCAA isn’t happy with Sampson or the school.

Indiana has until May 8 to provide a written response to the report and will be required to appear on June 14 at a Division I infractions committee hearing.

To be fair, as this Indianapolis Star article points out, these are only allegations. The school will investigate and then decide what to do about their first-year coach. (Cast your vote here.)

A cynic would note that the No. 13 Hoosiers (20-3) are enjoying their best season in years and, with stars D.J. White and Eric Gordon, are primed for their first Final Four since 2002. So any action before the season ends is unlikely. (And, even if one wasn’t a cynic, the school has until May 8 to provide its response, which makes it unlikely anyway.)

Would a Final Four – or a national championship – keep Sampson in Bloomington despite major violations and being dishonest? According to his contract, the school can fire him for "just cause."

From the Indianapolis Star:

Among the definitions of "just cause" in Sampson's contract is "a significant, intentional, repetitive violation of any law, rule (or) regulation" of the NCAA.

Another definition is "Failure to maintain an environment in which the coaching staff complies with NCAA ... regulations."

The contract says IU is allowed to use its "sole judgment" to determine if Sampson's conduct "reflects adversely upon the university and its athletic program."

Dragging a school through this type of situation doesn't do much for its reputation, which makes me think Sampson keeping his job is doubtful.

The only thing that would let Sampson stay on is if the allegations aren’t true. And even that may not be enough if the school wants to start over with a coach who doesn't have this kind of baggage.

Is it just me, or isn't this Sampson's 2nd year at IU?
As a long-time IU fan, I have been disgusted with the players' whining attitudes and often sloppy play.  Their pre-conference schedule was a joke now the Sampson mess puts a haze over the entire season, Championship or not.  I know many die-hard fans would rather have a clean .500 team that shows good sportsmanship than a winning team that ruins the good name of the school.
IU knew what they were getting into when they hired Sampson, so it's hard to sympathize. He's an excellent coach who will have little problem finding work should he be fired, though perhaps not at the level of Indiana. However, it will be future players that have to bear the brunt of NCAA penalties, which seem likely.
Are these infractions of the magnitude IU might face having a national title rescinded (should the team win it all).
I hear Bobby Knight is available
fire sampson now, how many recruits would he have signed if he had not violated the rules, and how many recruits did he get the edge on, he's a cheater, IU, you got what you wanted a top 25 program, all you did was turn the proud red and white pinstripes, to a dingy yellow and crimson. you should be proud now!
IU needs to go get Drew from Baylor
As an Indiana University graduate, I am truly sickened by this news. I know many people did not like Knight. But, he ran a clean program. As much pride as I have in my school, I am ashamed today.
Why did IU hire this individual? This was obviously a what the heck were they thinking moment!!!!!
I was driving to Bloomington when I heard on the radio Bob Knight (not "Bobby" to non-hoosiers) was terminated for contract violation/non-compliance. I haven't watched a game since.  Davis is/was a decent coach.  A little too green, but he did his best.  However, when I heard of the hiring of Sampson.........well, we all knew this day was coming.
Those responsible for the hiring of Kelvin Sampson should be held accountable, for they knew going into this relationship exactly what they were getting into. His MO was not a secret. What were they thinking? Knight made hay about the Purdue mentality. But look at where they are with their legitimate recruits and where IU is with Sampson's. The last ten years have been a fiasco for IU basketball. Wake up, people.
Fire Sampson, hire Bruce Pearl...let him paint himself red and white and bring on the titles.
We need a Tony Dungy type of a coach to run the IU basketball program.
I knew Jack Kennedy, and Kelvin Sampson is no Jack Kennedy!
Sampson had excess baggage when he was hired. IU needs to start with a clean slate. AD Greenspan should have to take a one time $250,000 pay cut, half of coaches pay cut for this season's contract violations.
I've been a Hoosier all my life, and my daughter is a grad student at IU! I don't understand why we didn't hire Alford when we had the chance. Indiana basketball is the heart and soul of the state - high school and college!! Let's preserve the integrity of our heritage!! This scandal will affect IU for a long long time!! Let's start recruiting the high school stars that represent Indiana basketball, and coaches that do the same!!(Bob Knight can still coach! from lost in Wisconsin-where basketball is an after thought!)
700 impermissable calls?  The multiple talker suggests a land line too.  No one's used a stationary phone that much since the mid-80's.  So, deep down, beneath the hardened shell of an older gentleman, exists the true Kelvin - a sweet little teenage girl who has a telephone addicition?  I would hate to see what that guy does at nights in his free time - sitting in his bedroom with posters of Justin Timberlake on the walls talking to his potential boyfriends. Forget sanctions - I think that some therapy might be in order.
IU basketball will survive this latest 'trust and honesty issue' as it has survived the firing of coach Knight and the coach Davis years. This proud program will move on to stability. The people responsible for hiring coach Sampson are the truly the guilty party in this. IU will make a better coaching choice, and I guess it will be soon. We can soon be proud of IU again.
As an IU alum I felt uneasy from the start after hearing Sampson was coming over from OK.  Now that he is at IN and the violations have reached a new high, I am convinced it will follow him through his career.  Lets release him now to avoid further negative publicity toward the school. Enough is enough.
Indiana has a rich basketball tradition...it will rise from the ashes once it restores integrity to its coaching position.  Hoosier basketball has fallen from its once lofty position, or to say it better, "when you get down with the dogs, you get up with the fleas"...time to wash yourself clean, Hoosier-mania!
IU set the standard when they let Bob Knight go. So I'll make this short sweet and to the point. Kelvin Sampson must go now not in May or some time after, NOW! Sampson has tarnished the reputation of the University and the State.
First off, IU should fire Sampson as soon as they are comfortable knowing that they will not be paying a seven figure settlement.  I am an IU fan, but let's get a couple things straight:

Mike Davis ran a clean program for 6 seasons and many fans couldn't wait to run him out of town.  The man took a team to the NCAA championship game and a year later his job was in jeopardy.  IU fans (myself included) want to win AND have a clean program, but we don't want one without the other.  Yes it is important for us to have a clean program, but as soon as things go south the head coach becomes public enemy number one.  It is fine to want both a clean program and a winning team, but nobody should sit here and say that if IU doesn't compete for conference and national titles people would be OK with it as long as the program was clean.  That isn't how this fan base operates.  Bobby Knight got away with it because of who he was and because he won 3 titles in 12 years, but he's not walking through the door anytime soon.

The last thing IU needs is Steve Alford to come back and coach.  He proved he can't hack it in the Big Ten while he was at Iowa.  Dr. Tom Davis and Lute Olson did pretty well for themselves there, so he shouldn't have any excuses made for him.  Playing under Bobby Knight doesn't make him a Big Ten quality coach.
Maybe Eric Gordon should transfer to Illinois now.
I appreciate the great tradition of IU basketball and while I am not a huge IU fan I believe this coach will continue to tarnish the program's reputation. It's very unfortunate that this team is experiencing success in 08' because no matter how deep this team goes in the NCAA, the hoosiers are playing with a black cloud over their head!
I am an IU alum and LOVE Indiana sports.  My heart is heavy right now as I try to understand what sports (college and professional) have become.  As I watch Clemens in baseball get drilled for possible illegal drug use, then the whispers of one of the best NFL football teams in years (Pats) video cheated (by the way I am die hard Colts), now IU, one of the cleanest programs out there, it just makes me sick.  Money is the root of it all and winning no matter how.  I know there are some clean programs out there however, I feel this is the norm now, try to get ahead at all costs no matter what the consequences.  I think alot of coaches have done what Sampson did, just have not been caught.  By no means am I excusing his behavior I am just disgusted by all sports right now.  In 90-91 I visited the Kentucky Wildcat lodge where the players stay etc. and remember seeing how they had EVERYTHING taken from them, big screen tvs etc, I mean everything all because of Eddie Sutton and his cheating ways.  That stuck with me forever, the disgracefulness of it all.  As much respect as I have for Rick Patino, folks around here always questioned how a school with sanctions to not play in NCAA tourney or be on national tv for 2 years, landed the caliber of recruits he did then of course won the title with them after sanctions ended, makes you wonder huh?
Kelvin Sampson is a very good coach.  It is unfortuate that he didn't learn anything from his run-in at the last univeristy before coming to Indiana. Not knowing what the NCAA rules are I don't see the big deal on phone calls. Its one thing if he had the players cheating on exams or receiving answers to a test, but, phone calls. Another thing that I don't trust are that I heard that the most damaging information came from interviews with parents of a student from Purdue and the other was from Illionis, that contributed to the investigation from the NCAA. What two programs hates Indiana the most. Another thing, I agree with the post from PS of Indianapolis, you had Mike Davis, and all you could hear from the Hoosier nation, get rid of him. Now hoosiers you can't have your cake and ice cream to. I only root for Indiana because I lived here now and will continue to root for them in the future. I just hate to see Coach Sampson in this mess (yes I know he created it) and hopes he can survive this and not be fired. If not I hope he can get another coaching job if Indiana fires him, because he is a good coach and teacher of the game.  My opinion.
As a longtime Hoosier fan, I am sickened by the recent actions of Kelvin Sampson. First, he dirtied up the program at Oklahoma and now he has come to Indiana and dirtied up our program. IU should have never hired Sampson in the first place, they knew what he had done at Oklahoma. IU has been "clean" since the l960's, not many college teams can say that these days. The officials at IU deserve whatever comes their way, but the players who work their butts off do not, it is not fair to them at all. Even though Knight was offensive, arrogant, whatever else you wish to call him, he ran a clean program and his players graduated on time. I say...BRING BACK BOBBY!
Bob Knight didn't cheat when recruiting and those that came to IU were expected to attend class and graduate.  Knight expected perfection from players, assistant coaches, and yes, even referees (they get paid for incompency).  When he was fired he was last in technical fouls that year.  Mike Davis took Knights team to the NCAA final game the following year and don't nobody forget that.  After that Davis' teams just stood around.  A jerk was brought in for one year to ride Knights back, all for expecting perfection.
It's time IU found a Bob Knight type to take the program back to where it was from 1973 - 1999.
The coach and the athletic director should be fired before the weekend.  The Board of Trustees should be next.
I as well believe Sampson should be fired. In the big view of things, what he has done (the extra phone calls) is NOT as bad as what Knight did (too long to list).  But if he lied and tried to cover up, that is why he should be fired.  Because of Knight's winning championships, IU turned their head for years and created a monster.  IU cannot afford to do that again.
As far as sanctions go, why don't they follow the coach more than they do the school?  Sampson can now ruin a 2nd school and have a job next year with a school that takes a chance on his with very few repercusions.  While IU (the school, the program, and the players) will suffer for years, Sampson will have a not-so-bad situation wherever he ends up.
