ABOUT THIS BLOG

News, analysis, feature stories, random thoughts... if it's about college basketball, either in season or during the summer doldrums, you'll find it in Beyond the Arc.

Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Friday's fun: Hoops humor

Friday should always be fun. It’s not hard to get happy about Friday for most of the workforce, but I say this as a guy who works weekends.

Rather than be crusty about it (too late) I offer up the fun Friday links. Nothing but humor and goofy clicks. I return to serious matters (read: Elite Eight games) on Saturday.

Nothing made me laugh more this week than an “exclusive” at Tennessee’s playbook. The Vols’ offense excel at running the “three with a hand in your face.”

More from SimonOnSports: Great moments in Flat Top history. Watch out for Drago.

What would the Sweet 16 coaches be doing if they weren’t coaches? Glad you asked. Uncanny resemblances to Mr. Bean and Chachi.

Dickie V sports his Cinderella best. More like an ugly stepmother.

This one’s made the blog rounds for a week or so, but it’s still a classic: Ernest Hemingway blogs about the tourney teams. Give him credit for accurately predicting when Tennessee will lose. (Then again, Papa thought the Hoyas would win it all…)

“The Volunteers run and gun like true men on the front line. They wage basketball war. They can tear through any defense, even mustard gas. But their coach wears suits from a burlesque show. Bruce Pearl is unfit to coach men like these Volunteers. They were lucky to beat Memphis, but he strutted like a circus barker. He should manage a cabaret dressing room. He destroys his team's masculine power like perfume in the trenches. They will fall in the Sweet 16.”

While I’m back on a Tennessee topic, Bruce Pearl is a man who enjoys life. No wonder he made the All-Cupid team.

Tale of the Tape: The Sweet 16 vs. My Super Sweet 16. (I don’t watch the show. Really.)

Former Player of the Year Andrew Bogut doesn’t have many friends on the Milwaukee Bucks. High five!

This gripe about March Madness isn’t that funny until you get to the end. Someone read Hemingway’s blog.

Also funny? One Duke student’s lament about a 28-6 season. Well, I think it’s funny having done the same thing while at Kansas. The hurt will eventually stop, Andrew. I promise. Now enjoy that Carolina game!

Finally, nationalizing the bracket pool isn’t funny, but brilliant! But a bigger tourney? Man, I don’t know. To quote Stifler, that sounds like a lot of work! And what happens to the CBI?

The size of the tournament is great right now.  It is not as if double digit teams even now have much impact on the final four.  A second bowl of icecream soes not taste any better than the first.

The NIT gives the second tier teams a tournament to win and has a better old fashioned atmosphere for the fans at hand of "lets just <play> basketball!"
