Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Tide may be turning on Calhoun

The tide may be turning on Jim Calhoun.

When the Connecticut coach defended his $1.6 salary during a state budgetary crisis from a freelance reporter on Saturday, it made for entertaining theater. Calhoun didn’t mince words, telling him to “shut up” and “get some facts.” (The video is on the link.)

Calhoun was, to my knowledge, roundly considered right by various pundits, bloggers and commentators, though a touch rude. Tuesday, Connecticut governor M. Jodi Rell agreed.

“I think if Coach Calhoun had the opportunity right now, he would welcome a do-over and not have that embarrassing display from last week,” Rell said.

Even more embarrassing? Calhoun’s authoritative response may have contained the wrong facts.

“We bring $12 million into this university. Nothing to do with state funds. We make $12 million dollars a year for this university,” he said.

I didn’t crunch the numbers, but they come from Deadspin’s Rick Chandler, a guy I used to work with and trust. And the numbers have the Huskies well shy of $12 million.

According to the Department of Education's Equity in Athletics Data Analysis site, UConn’s men’s program generated $7,332, last season. It’s still a healthy chunk, but there’s $4.7 million missing somewhere. Added advertising or endorsement deals maybe?

Whether Calhoun’s worth $1.6 million is irrelevant. The school deemed it an appropriate salary. I just want the rest of the facts, like the man said.

So I read Pat Forde's story later Tuesday, which clears up some more of the UConn numbers. What'd he find?

Here are the facts as the U.S. Department of Education sees them, per an annual financial report submitted by UConn assistant athletic director Maureen O'Connor: The men's basketball program generated $7.3 million in revenues in 2007-08. It spent $6.1 million.

One UConn source said those numbers don't tell the whole story. The source said men's basketball is conservatively responsible for an additional $4 million in corporate marketing revenue and $4.5 million in donations to the school's booster organization, the UConn Club. That gets closer to a net profit of $12 million, but not all the way there.

Check out Forde's story. It's an insightful look into high salaries and what role coaches play in the growing state budget woes.

What Calhoun does is produce winning teams.  If UConn gets rid of him, who are they going to replace him with?  He will be snatched up by a program before the ink is dry on his termination notice.
Calhoun may have been rude, but it was just as rude of that reporter to ask it.  Did the reporters feelings get hurt?  Does he need a tissue?  Calhoun makes money for UConn, which is much more than his salary.  The first time UConn tries to have him take a salary cut, chances are he will be out the door.  He needs a raise!
I loved it.  It's not Calhouns fault we are in this mess.  He deserves what he gets.  He not only brings income to the school, but also the state.  The millions of dollars generated by the program to all businesses big and small.  Tournaments bring in money as well as game night when visiting schools attend.  food and lodgindg and souveniers.  The Governors' remarks are stupid.  If she was paying attention to her job and looking out for the state, this would be a moot point.  Also the state pride the huskies bring.  I've been in Florida and when people find out I'm from Ct. the first thing they say is what a great program the University on Ct. is.  So good for you Jim.  I think that you were great.  We need more people to tell the bleeding heart buck passers to SHUT UP!
worth every dime!
Ct. doesn't have a Professional Sports Team
we poor our support and love into our college teams and while losing games(inevitable), they have never let us down.
But for 1.6 million he should be fixing up the Hartford downtown area so I don't get stabbed the next time I go to a game.

It wasn't the fact that he makes that much money - his contract is public info - it's that he's a complete idiot in the way he handled the question.  People are getting fired every day and he has the balls to sit there and talk about how he needs every last penny of 1.6 million?  I don't care crass the reporter was in asking the question, it was a poor performance from a public figure.  Jodi Rell is a classy (and calm) governor, and as she oversees all state employees eventually, she has the right to tell her subordinates to shut the hell up and deal with challenging questions with a bit of tact.

By the way - he's not going anywhere, D.  That wasn't the point.
Eli, I respect your point of view.  But if that is what they were willing to pay for a winning program than so be it.  But I have to ask you, do you even know who the Governor is?  She is a complete no show.  How has the lives of the people in this state gotten better under this woman?  The state has tanked under her watch.  She took a record surplus and turned it into a record deficit.  This woman has no credibility, none.  Listening to her is like watching a bad traffis accident.  You don't want to watch but you look anyway, and then ask yourself why.  When she got in by default,  She was either aware of what Rowland was doing and turned a blind eye, or was too stupid to know what was going on.  Either way this "Classy" and "calm" lady has no clue or business running this state.  She has not shown any leadership in controlling the fleecing of this state.  So if that is classy to you, I hear Jessica Simpson might be canceling her tour early, maybe we can get her here.
Eli presents a well thought out and pointed argument.
Calhoun has never been noted for his tact. However, some crucial points have been overlooked by everyone here. Jim Calhoun gives back to Connecticut through various charities and gives substantially of his free time in doing so. How many of those in the chorus of naysayer volunteer their time and resources as selflessly? Calhoun has brought - along with Geno Auriemma(1.2 mil) and Randy Edsal(1.5 mil) - Uconn to national prominence. The University now competes for the best and brightest students in the world along with the likes of Duke and Notre Dame. Calhoun may be less than articulate, but his net worth to Connecticut is incalculable.
