Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

An updated Top 25 for 2009-10

Filed Under:

Nearly every piece is now in place for next year’s Top 25. Nearly every recruit is in place. Only a few schools are without a coach.

And the deadline for the NBA draft’s early entrants has now … passed. (Well, at least those players who didn’t sign an agent. Guys like Jonny Flynn were done with school long ago.) That means the ridiculously early Top 25s that circulated after North Carolina won the NCAA tournament can be updated with meaningful changes.

Like Syracuse dropping out, Mississippi State moving up and Washington holding steady. The No. 1 team on my old list didn’t change, but there was plenty of other movement. And, like 2008-09, there are groups to consider: the contenders, the hopefuls, the Top 25 rotation and everyone else. The teams are separated by slim margins – especially since it’s June. (June, people! Everything can and will change in the next six months.)

Kalin Lucas

As always, I don’t expect this list to please everyone, so submit your own Top 25 below. But keep it clean, people. That means you Eli.

No. 1 Kansas
Every player is back from Bill Self’s Big 12 champs, headed by national player of the year candidates Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich. If having a nine-man rotation return isn’t enough, the Jayhawks also have three prize recruits in Xavier Henry, Elijah Johnson and Thomas Robinson. The biggest problem in Lawrence will be finding enough playing time – which can be an issue (see UNC, 1994).

No. 2 Duke
This spot easily could have gone to Kentucky. Or Villanova. Or Michigan State. Or Purdue. These five teams, along with Kansas, are the best title bets, to my mind. I give Duke the edge here because this 30-win team returns every important player from last year except Gerald Henderson. Forwards
Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee will be crucial to a short frontcourt.

No. 3 Kentucky
Losing Jodie Meeks hurts. He merely led the ‘Cats in scoring last season and would’ve been a crucial defense-stretcher in John Calipari’s dribble-drive offense. Still, John Wall will be doing his best Derrick Rose impersonation, and the frontcourt of Patrick Patterson, DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton is awfully imposing. But … if the freshmen play like freshmen, Kentucky won’t even be the best team in the SEC.

No. 4 Villanova
This year’s Final Four surprise should be the Big East favorites in 2010. Scottie Reynolds is back, along with Reggie Redding, the two Coreys (not those, these) and a recruiting class that most years would rank No. 1 (Jay Wright shakes fist at Calipari). Let the ‘Cat fight commence!

No. 5 Michigan State
Kalin Lucas can carry the Spartans back to the Final Four (he’s likely the preseason player of the year), but he doesn’t have to do it alone. MSU returns three starters and has budding stars in Durrell Summers and Raymar Morgan. But they won’t walk to the Big Ten title with No. 6 right on their heels …

No. 6 Purdue
The Boilermakers dealt with more injuries this season than nearly any other contender. If Robbie Hummel’s back is healthy, Purdue will challenge the Spartans and be a title contender. It returns every starter, including budding superstar JaJuan Johnson. He and Hummel are currently giving it their all for Uncle Sam.

No. 7 North Carolina
No Tyler Hansbrough, no Ty Lawson, no Wayne Ellington and no Danny Green. No problem. The Heels still have Deon Thompson and Ed Davis up front, and bring in prize recruits John Henson and Leslie McDonald. Seven may be a bit high, but Roy Williams is usually good for 30 wins.

No. 8 Texas
The ‘Horns figure to be the thorn in Kansas’ side. Damion James made the smart move, which lets him pair with Dexter Pittman and Gary Johnson up front and incoming five-star prospects Avery Bradley and Jordan Hamilton. Only Kentucky has two higher-rated recruits coming in next year.

No. 9 West Virginia
Dropped the Mountaineers down a bit, but expect them to be a Top 15 mainstay. Devin Ebanks is a lottery-type talent and point guard Joe Mazzulla may one of the country’s most underrated players. This is the year West Virginia lives up to kenpom.com’s ratings.

No. 10 Tennessee
Another SEC team in the Top 10? I believe that much in Tyler Smith. I believe in the Vols’ young talent being more consistent. I do not believe Bruce Pearl has a future in rap music.

No. 11 Ohio State
Forget about B.J. Mullens. As long as Evan Turner’s back in Columbus, that’s enough to make the Buckeyes a Final Four darkhorse. Added bonus: David Lighty and every other starter join him.

No. 12 Cal
Bumped the Bears up a few spots. I think they’ll be the Pac-10’s best team, but that’s not saying much in a league that doesn’t have a true national title contender. All-league players Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher are the best of the bunch.

No. 13 Washington
Abdul Gaddy is the best freshman point guard not named John Wall. That’s enough to offset losses of Jon Brockman and Justin Dentmon (some Huskies fans think losing Dentmon will add wins). Isaiah Thomas now becomes the nation’s shortest shooting guard.

No. 14 Butler
Bulldogs were too low on my earlier list.
They averaged 28 wins a season the last three years. That won’t change with everyone returning, including Horizon player of the year Matt Howard.

No. 15 Miss State
Big caveat: Renardo Sidney must be eligible. No Sidney, no Top 25.

No. 16 Oklahoma
Left the Sooners off my earlier list because I doubted Willie Warren would return to school. But he’ll be back in Norman, along with star recruits Keith Gallon and Tommy Mason-Griffin. OU’s not as good as Kansas or Texas, and will be pushed by Oklahoma State and Missouri in the Big 12.

No. 17 Connecticut
Caught a lot of grief for leaving off the Huskies in the earlier Top 25. I wasn’t sure Stanley Robinson or Ater Majok would be back on campus, but that was an error. With Kemba Walker leading the way, the Huskies are a Sweet 16 team.

No. 18 Dayton
Another earlier omission, and a bad one. The Flyers won 27 games last season, won an NCAA tourney game – and nearly have the entire roster back. They don’t look pretty, but they should be the A-10’s top team.

No. 19 Minnesota
Tubby Smith returns all five starters and brings in a solid recruiting class. Gophers’ biggest problem will be dealing with Purdue, Ohio State and Michigan State.

No. 20 Oklahoma State
Cowboys will miss Byron Eaton and Terrel Harris, but won’t miss a beat. Travis Ford’s team shoots 3s, plays fast and has a fleet of incoming recruits. Everyone runs, everyone scores. Try and keep up.

No. 21 Michigan
Never underestimate a John Beilein team. Especially when Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims are on the roster.

No. 22 Missouri
The Big Ten-Big 12 format continues. Was torn on the Tigers. Losing Leo Lyons and DeMarre Carroll will be a huge problem, both on the stat sheets and in leadership. Still, Mizzou’s got a deep roster and one of the nation’s top coaches in Mike Anderson. They’re still dangerous.

No. 23 Louisville
Leap of faith here with Rick Pitino. I think losing Earl Clark, Terrence Williams and Andre McGee is a lot to overcome. If Samardo Samuels and Terrence Jennings can’t carry the load up front, the Cards are in trouble. The incoming prospects are role players, not stars.

No. 24 Georgetown
I believe in Greg Monroe.

No. 25 Siena
Omitted the Saints on the previous list. Reader Tim asked “If Ohio State is 12 with all starters returning, why isn’t Siena 11 with all their starters returning?” Siena did win a classic double overtime NCAA tourney game, but it lost its best player in Kenny Hasbrouck. Does 25 seem better?

On the brink
Florida State – Awesome frontcourt of Solomon Alabi, Chris Singleton and Jordan Mercy gets scoring boost from freshman Michael Snaer, but that NCAA choke job looms.

Illinois – The Illini are a Top 25 team if Mike Davis recovers from his broken ankle. Adjusting to life after Chester Frazier won’t be easy, though.

Xavier – B.J. Raymond, Derrick Brown and C.J. Anderson are gone. So is Sean Miller. I know the Musketeers are talented and deep, but to expect another 25-win season is hoping for too much.

Florida – Nick Calathes’ departure prevents the Gators from a preseason Top 25. Still, it’s about time a Billy Donovan team was relevant again.

Gonzaga – The perennial mid-major power lost three starters and gunner Micah Downs. They’ll win the WCC and rack up wins, but won’t be a national contender.

I wish you would have put Duke #1 or Kentucky. Don't want the Hawks to have that preseason #1 bullzeye. Anyway it's gonna be another great year to be a Jayhawk.
Kansas is looking good..Duke as well...Kentucky is a joke...no shooters wont help the guard play...too many freshman..and a cheater coach..
Mr. Miller,

Please revise this blog post immediately to reflect Wyoming's rightful standing in the top 25.

Thank you.
What is this, 1988?
Syracuse drops out completely?  You're out of your mind.
Missouri at 22 is a joke this guy doesn't know anything about basketball if he thinks MU is gonna be any good.
Mike, I like you, but you're smokin' crack if you think Duke is No. 2. Don't fall for loving The Rat. Gerald Henderson was the best player on that team and carried them last year. As Andy Katz writes: "Duke is still a top-15 team, but not having Henderson (or for that matter, not getting John Wall) means the Blue Devils will lack a blow-by scorer. They will be bigger and more skilled, but missing Henderson's athleticism will hurt." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=4261340

Who fills that gap? Sorry. They've been overrated, they were last year, and now you're overrating them already. It's ashame, really.
Maybe you're right Deep 3. Maybe Duke isn't the No. 2 team in the country. But I'm OK with them there for now. Guess I'm a sucker for deep, experienced teams, which is the Blue Devils.
Duke #2, I don't think so. Here's a team without their go to guy, who lost to Nova by 20 and it could have been worse had the dogs not been taken off the court.
Although, NOVA has a strong freshman class, they are still freshmen. It will be another year before they mature and are ready for the top five in the country. However, they do belong somewhere in the top ten; and, everyone forgets that Taylor King, formerly of Duke, a shooter and a very good rebounder for his height, will be eligible this coming season. He will make a big contribution this coming season/.
Being a former Nova player, I believe the best team in the country to be either Mich State or Kansas. But, with Jay Wright coaching, NOVA could again surprise everyone.
I would place NC above Duke; they still have a lot of firepower, but they've got to find a point guard fast.
mizzou will be lucky to make the nit, texas is better than 8, ku will be very very good, ksu will have their best team in a long time and they have finished in the top 4 of the big 12 the past 4 years.
Yeah and no love to the runner ups. MSU finished #2 was #2 right after the early preseason rankings and now drops to #5.  I am sure they will be down to #12 by the start of the season becuase nobody gives them preseason credit.
Pitt drops out completely? You are out of your mind.
Instead of carping about a team being left out, why not add who they should be higher than and why.  There can only be 25 teams in a Top 25, so unless you can objectively point out why your team should be higher, the "[my team] should be ranked" posts are pointless.
Can't agree with Illinois not being in the top 25 and especially being 6th in the Big 10.  They tied for 2nd last year (and beat Purdue, Michigan, OSU and Minnesota) with a lack of athleticism at a couple of positions and some bad shooting games.

With Davis healing, one of the best incoming classes in years (with two FR who led their teams and hit big shots) and Weber getting the most out of his players, Illinois should be at least 3rd in the Big 10 and in the top 25.
Siena is a MAAC team that has been greatly helped by facing the incredible talent in the league, particularly Marist college. If not for their narrow escape last year at McCann, things could have been a whole lot different. Other good teams like Niagara, Rider and Canisius.
I love how people overrate Dayton as being a good team only to see them flop below expectations.  They will be one of the first teams to drop out of the top 25. I mean come on Dayton...they won a NCAA game this year but the way both teams played in that game, I thought I was watching a CBI game.  Before that, when was the last time they actually won an NCAA game?  Its a joke program, last year was their best year they will ahve in 20 years.
Clemson.  They should be in the 16-20 range.
Are we so quick to stick a fork in UCLA, a ton of young talent should have at least got an honorable mention
I go with "richard john" concerning Dayton.  Xavier has owned them for years--Sean Miller gone or not.  Go Muskies--top 25.
As a VU alum, I love seeing the Cats at #4.  But lets be realistic, Dante Cunningham was the heart and soul of last year's team...losing him moves this team to the second 10.
Maybe its just me, but it seems like people have been saying for four years that Duke will be the team to beat next year, when they haven't added any substantial talent during that time and have just lost their best talent.  They will win 30 games, but what does that mean in the end?  It means a big disappointment when they don't make the sweet 16.  Leave them out of your list and make them prove it for once.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not including Marquette.  We can continue to be the "surprise" team in the Big East, "sneak" into a bye game in the Garden, perhaps "steal" a tournament game, win the usual 23 or so games, be a nation leader in home attendence (again), and then next year again be left off your list.  Watch out for this year's recruiting class - MU is bigger than ever to add to its usual array of back court talent.  Beware the Warriors.
I like the Buckeyes, but number #11? The Big Ten is getting a lot better with Michigan State, Purdue, and Illinois. I would put them at #15.
People need to take notice in whats happening in Bloomington !  The Hoosiers New coach, involved aluni, and good old fashion hoosier basketball spirit, this means "Whatch out" !
Where do you see GA Tech???
Watch out for Arizona now with Coach Miller. He is getting some great recruits that Tom Floyd had at USC. He has garnered the 12th best recruits in the country plus Nic Wise will return. Arizona has to be in top 25 now.
Thanks for giving college hoops fans something to chew on in mid summer. No sport has the wonderment as does March Madness. We all have our favorites but it is a whole month of sports bars with many games and favorite foods and sports talk. It can't come too soon. Gonna print your predictions and see what comes of it.  My Final Four hopes are Kansas, North Carolina, Arizona and Kentucky.
uconn is no doubt a top ten team just from the experience of the coaching staff alone not to mention how they seem to get the most from their players year after year
University of Memphis no doubt is a dark horse, but with the players they have and a sharp new coach...if he has any luck at all in getting them together as a team...look out!
Duke lost Elliott Williams...they have Scheyer and Smith at the point, how in the world could they be #2?  Their frontcourt are two freshmen...you gotta be kidding me!  They're prob between 10 and 15 at most....UNC w/o Larry Drew should be ok but also probably in the top 10-15 range but their big men are far superior than Duke's.
Hey Cesasr, I wrote this before Williams left Duke. With him, I thought they were a decent No. 2. Without him, they drop to about 6 or 7.
I hope everyone understands what a great job Bill Self has done since taking over the KU basketball program. Even after losing all his starters from the 2008 National Championship team, he was able to regroup, reorganize, and put forward a Big 12 Championship team in 2009. Don't ever count out the Jayhawks with Bill Self as their coach!
kentucky has the most talent in college BasketBall! With pat patterson moving to his natural PF position an someone else anchoring the middle plus adding 2 top notch PGs is exactly what we needed. Orton,Bledsoe,cousins,DMillerU19team nuff said! Bleed Blue! sorry UNC your not passing us 4 wins now!Watch out UCLA! Banners will be coming aplenty!UK#1
Arizona ..Go Cats! Sooooo glad we got Coach Miller!
Hope Parrom doesn't punch him out.
Finally, since Tubby Smith took Rick Pitino's team and won the NCAA, we have a real coach who knows how to do something besides sit on the bench and watch the team go back and forth. And we are not number 1 yet but wait til the end of the year.
What ever happen to other ACC teams like the only team to beat both tourney finalist (UNC & MSU) during the regular season and they have their 6'5" premier scorer coming back...is there ever any love for the ACC other than the blue and white on tobacco road.  How about giving some props to the TERPS of Maryland.  They graduated 1 starter with everyone back!
Everyone is all stirred up over nuthin'. I love the debate of these "Top" rankings before a player has even stepped on the court, the ball has been tipped off and the players make a shot. PEOPLE!!!! These guys are guessing. Any of 'em that make a list of who they think will finish or be in whatever position they place them in. Don't get your jockstraps in a wad over these lists, geesh.
And as for love in the ACC, is there any of the other teams that don't wear either color of blue and white that actually deserve to be recognized? Those are the only two teams that are consistantly in the top 20 at the end of the year (give or take a rebuilding year here and there)?
Looks like the Jayhawks are loaded again. Could be the schools 6 NCAA championship! Bill Self has done a great job!
Tennessee sucks!  They're always overrated!  Duke is much too small to be a true national contender.  Where's UCLA?  Where's Pitt?  They're both rebuilding, but both are very dangerous and will contend for the title.
Yes, Kansas tops every one.
I am waiting for the biggest secret in High School Basketball to make a committment: Marco Porcher-Jimenez of Oak Hill Academy.  He will be one of the top shooting guards in the USA and wherever he goes, that college team will be a contender... look out for this secret...
kansas #1   or maybe georgia southern  eagles will shock the college basketball universe and win the undisputed ncaa.national championship of men's college basketball 2009/2010.
DUKE at number 2, you are crazy, they will not be all that this year. im still an SYRACUSE FAN, and still think they deserve to be in the top 25 this year.
duke - overrated, BIG TIME
unc - overrated
clemson - underated
UMD - underated
Ga Tech Underated

NO WAY carolina and Duke finish in 1-2 in the acc this year.. NO WAY..
where are NCAA rules on T V time all you see on sports channel is NC or Duke do their alumi run these channels this should be against the rules everything else is
If the tarheels get consistant play at the point guard, they will win the ACC and be in the hunt at final four time. Tradition, defence, and coaching always is a winner.
Everyone, keep hatin on kentucky. John Wall is all i have to say. We'll be number one by the couple weeks, and wont lose that status throughtout the whole season.
I'm an Indiana fan, but I gotta give Purdue props this year.  Veteran coach, veteran team, Big Ten tough... no need to say more.  Except for this:  Tom Crean is quietly putting together a contender.  Hope Purdue enjoyed it's bragging rights while it lasted; won't be for much longer...
ROCK CHALK JAYHAWKS!!!! only thing stopping them this year is the hype that goes on in their minds. If they start believing all the crap on lists like this, then say good-by to the championship. Just shut up and play. Listen to your coaches and just play the game.
