Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Many thanks to Coach K staying at Duke

Mike Krzyzewski to the Lakers isn’t happening. Told you it was an easy choice.

Coach K left no room for future speculation – unlike other sports figures who refuse to ever, ever go away – about current employer. He’s staying at Duke. It wasn’t Drew Rosenhaus short, but it was simple, direct and clear.

"I will never leave Duke until I leave coaching," he said Tuesday. "I'm not going to the Lakers. They have one of the great coaches in the game [in Phil Jackson]. I can't do it as well as he can.”

So he made a statement without any wiggle room. And for that, many thanks should go to Coach K.

It’s an obvious thanks from Duke fans. Krzyzewski is the program’s Alpha and Omega. Three NCAA tourney titles, 10 Final Fours and 21 combined ACC regular-season and tourney titles earns you that distinction. (To say nothing of his returning players.)

Duke haters should cheer, too. Some people live for rooting against him. Losing Coach K would deprive them of their hate focal point. It’d be like Raider haters (and some fans) having to cope without Al Davis or liberals living life without Rush Limbaugh. It’s not as interesting.

College hoops, the ACC and the NCAA must be breathing a little easier.  He’s arguably the most recognizable name and face in college coaching. Losing that would be a setback to the sport, league and the organization.

And it’s a big thank you from us media types. Coach K jumping to the NBA would open up a flood of stories on other coaches who tried (and mostly failed), his college hoops legacy, who would replace him, what happens to his players, etc. I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

Sure, those stories are coming at some point, but it’s not gonna be soon.

“I don’t want my Duke team — not necessarily my basketball team, but my Duke team, the community — to feel like you’re looking at other things. I’m getting ready to start my 30th year at Duke, and I don’t see the finish line yet. I know the finish line will be there sometime, but it’s not in my vision right now.”

In other words, don’t plan on a Coach K-free landscape anytime soon. Who knew that was such a good thing?

I'm a Duke fan but, even if I were a hater of Duke, I wouldn't want to see him go. I wouldn't want UNC to become a doormat. What joy would I get from seeing Duke beat UNC if everyone was doing it? UNC being great makes Duke better and vice versa. Coack K is good for the NCAA!
I agree Jack. The blueblood programs being good is good for all of us college hoops fans. I love that Kentucky is back in the mix. I can't wait to watch Kentucky crash and burn this year. Kentucky may have surpassed Duke for the focal point of this Jayhawks hate.

What I really don't like about Duke is not Coach K. It basically comes down to Cameron Indoor. Very overrated place to watch a game. It's no Allen Fieldhouse by a long shot.

Coach  K. to collage basketball is like the sea, to salt.
The two mix well together, there are many more sunsets to go before the last one sets over Coach K. and never over Duke.
As a UNC fan I would hate to see the rat face boy leave. Part of the joy in beating Dook is watching him cry, complain and blame everyone but himself for the loss.
bill,
Coach K may look like a rat, but good ole Roy looks like the missing chipmunk....Alvin, Simon, Theodore, and dear little Roy.  Back together again.  Plus at least he used his own players to win all his championships
Why don't you just name him basketball's all-time  greatest coach.  After all, with your UCLA-hating track record you have already minimized John Wooden's accomplishments.  Why not show everyone where you really stand?

Your east coast bias is pathetic.

Coach K is a good coach.  Too bad you aren't a good blogger.
I bleed Carolina Blue but have to admit that Coach K is one of the greatest college coaches of all times (it hurt to say that, but not as bad as I thought). Also, his loyalty to his university has been proven many times over. I believe him when he says he's there for life.
His back must be feeling OK.....a little twinge and look out Chris Collins....you might become the next Pete Gaudet!
As a Kentucky fan I hope Coach K will be aound for years to come.

There is only 2 people that can compare to John Wooden and Neither of them are in college.  No where in this article was anything mentioned about Wooden.  Phil Jackson and Red Aurbach are the only ones you can argue are better than Wooden.  But neither of them had the same dominance as wooden.
