ABOUT THIS BLOG

News, analysis, feature stories, random thoughts... if it's about college basketball, either in season or during the summer doldrums, you'll find it in Beyond the Arc.

Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

A game for more than Tar Heel fans

Hand it to North Carolina – the school knows how to kick off a celebration.

A pro alumni game featuring the likes of Vince Carter, Rasheed Wallace and members of the 2005 and 2009 title teams is set for Sept. 4. Tickets are $20 a pop, but that seems like a deal to see roughly 24 ex-Heels strut their stuff.

This news has been around a while now, but it’s still enthralling. It’s the stuff arguments and reminiscing are made of.

Few schools had more players bolt early for the NBA than UNC. This game lets people daydream about what could’ve been all-time great teams (Carter, Antawn Jamison, Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse, Jeff McInnis and Shammond Williams on the same roster? Yikes.) and mouth-watering matchups.

Raymond Felton vs. Ty Lawson. Tyler Hansbrough vs. Sean May. Carter skywalking for dunks and Wayne Ellington raining 3s.

The most eagerly anticipated showdown is for 2005 vs. 2009, but that won’t happen.  Deon Thompson and Ed Davis won’t be playing since, well, they’re not alums. (Argument’s sake, I go 2009 ‘cause I like their balance and ability to throw defenders at May.)

Still, I like these starting lineups submitted by ACC Now: Felton, Rashad McCants, Stackhouse, May and Wallace vs. Lawson, Ellington, Carter, Jamison and Hansbrough.

It’s almost enough to make me book a flight for Chapel Hill.

Sooooooooooooo what.
Ditto on the

Soooooooo what.

P.S.
I understand it has to be tough to come up with things to write about during a dull summer. The Heels alumni game? I mean come on.
T and Matt: people would rightly ignore an alumni game at any Big 10 school. The conference gives us enough 52-45 snorefests during the regular season - we don't need to see another one with seasoned D-league veterans.  But a Carolina alumni game would feature both NBA All-Stars and some of the most promising young players in the league.  If that game's on TV, you would watch.
