Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Whose idea was Pitino's cringe-worthy presser?

Guess we should’ve seen this coming.

How Rick Pitino went all these months without snapping when it came to all the talk of infidelity, extortion  and he said/she said is actually kind of amazing. Even public figures who regularly deal with the media don’t always stay cool under pressure.

Yet Pitino’s largely been a model of restraint, allowing the authorities and lawyers to handle the legal aspects and remaining mostly mum on the subject publicly.

And then … this happened. Whether it was the local media coverage or that he was simply fed up, Pitino lost it.

(A longer version can be found here.)

Right from start, it’s clear Pitino shouldn’t be talking. He’s working from a script, but clearly he’s angry, and it’s the kind of anger that slowly builds and boils up until you can’t even talk without shaking. I’m surprised he could see straight.

Good things rarely happen when you’re that angry. And this was not the exception. He was tired of keeping his mouth shut about the “pure hell” he and his family have been through.

“Enough is enough. I am saying something. It's a lie,” Pitino said.

For seven minutes, he lectured the audience on the proper way to handle the story, even ripping local media for interrupting coverage on Ted Kennedy’s death to report on some developments that weren’t really new.

“Everything that’s been printed, everything that’s been reported, everything that’s been breaking in the news on the day Ted Kennedy died is 100 percent a lie, a lie,” Pitino said. “All of this has been a lie, a total fabrication of the truth.”

I can’t stop watching it. How do you avert your eyes from a mess unfolding in front of you?

But why hold that press conference? Just who thought it was good idea? Did his loyal friends and advisors tell him the press would stop covering the case if he asked them?

He doesn’t have to be defensive when it comes to the case. Even if you don’t think the local media is treating you fairly, holding a press conference and losing your mind in front of a national audience is the best way to lose any public favor you once had.

Let the details continue to emerge and let officials handle Karen Sypher. If you’re convinced the “truth” will come out at trial, then wait for the trial.

You’re frustrated. Fine. Be frustrated to your friends and family, not the rest of the country. The sooner you stop lecturing everyone about how to cover the case, the sooner it’ll be forgotten.

Great way to avoid these problems is to keep your zipper up.  How do you think his wife and kids feel?Great role model for his athletes!!
Rumors out of Louisville are that the press conference is a preemptive strike in an attempt to stop the reporting of additional women coming out about their affairs with Pitino.  People are suggesting that multiple women have contacted Louisville media outlets to tell their stories.

What Pitino did was take his story which had run its course in the national media circuit, had seen the new Sypher interviews limited to the state of Kentucky and bring it back in the national spotlight.  He also may have killed his chance at having the trial in Louisville since Sypher lawyers could easily suggest a change of venue due to the defendant publically calling their client a liar in downtown Louisville.
He is right you guys print what you want us to hear or what will sell the most copies get the highest ratings> Some day you or your loved ones will fall into something where you recieve 15 minutes of fame. eh made a mistake ....who hasn't let it die.
pretty funny. One philanderer is pissed off that the media cut into another philanderer's death announcement to further the philanderer's story. My what a viciuos cycle!
it's very, important for coach pitino to play the victim. the way ted played the victim after chappaquiddick. the way bill played the victim after monicagate. the way favre plays the victim whenever he destroys a football team.
He is a joke.  If you don't want the media coverage to make your and your families life "hell" then why go on TV and blast the media.  Hello?  Look at me, I am on TV today.  Please.  U of L fans...revolt.
Uh, the truth is that the hypocriticical phony religious dirtbag Pitino betrayed his family, his wife, and his supposed morals to bang some broad on a resaurant table...go ahead Rick, what part isn't true, tell us...and why UL would want to keep such a disgraced poor example of how to live your life on its payroll in such a critical and visible postion is sad.
It seems funny that the press has reported Pitino's side of the story, but he gets mad when they report Karen's. This women has been suppressed by the entire might of U of L. What was he doing having sex with her on a dining table anyway? If she was trying to extort him, he set himself up for it. This guy is too arrogant.
I was hoping for a train wreck.  That wasn't even close to a train wreck.  It wasn't even a shopping cart ding in the parking lot.  Certainly, and deservedly, old Louisville money is going to run Pitino out of town.  Maybe he'll take you with him.
This isn't the first time he has done something of this nature; just the first time someone called him out on it.  He says his family shouldn't be put through this; the media didn't commit the act coach, you did, so don't blame the media for putting your family through this!
This author is off track, are you a Louisville fan?. Rick Pitino has no right to complain at all. It takes such a huge ego. He's actually the victim? You've got to be kidding. Anybody with half a brain (obviously the author is missing his half) knows that when you have an extra-marital affair this will have a negative 'impact' on the family. And since he was the cause of this trouble, he has no leg to stand on. Oh... and completely insensitive to his wife's feelings. So not only is Rick Pitino an egocentric idiot, he is boorish.

Rick Pitino.... JUST SHUT UP!

Mike Miller.... Are you married? Books are available that describe 'gentlemanly' behavior.
I thought the press conference was fine.  I saw nopthing wrong with it.  It is about time someone stood up to the breathless sensationalism of the media.
A new take on an old line: "If you do the crime, then don't do the whine." Zipper stays shut, there's no reason to be forced to blow your cool in front of the media. He's upset that people know what he did and the story won't go away. Get real, Rick. You're one of the most visible coaches in the country, and an avowed religious family man who strayed. That is news, if nothing else than for the apparent hypocrisy you displayed. I'm tired of coaches and athletes who love the media attention until it turns out they "made a mistake in judgement" then want it all to go away quietly. As I said, "if you do the crime, don't do the whine."
Actually, Pitino was pretty good. I don't like the guy, and he made a big mistake. But he's absolutely right that the media everywhere in this country have abdicated the job of researching their stories and have instead turned into vehicles for self-serving press releases and instant sensation. Nearly half the country believes flat out lies about the current proposals for health care reform in Congress, and that's partly because the media don't do actual reporting anymore.
Typical media bulls_it, why don't they cover the downfall of our country by our current political administration instead of digging into a working mans personal life. What is the correlation between ones job and personal life. I didn't see this kind of coverage when Marion Berry, a political figure who represented the city of Detroit, was caught smoking crack cocaine on video. Makes one wonfer why?
I don't think he hurt himself.  Interestingly, because she's an even bigger scumbag than Petino, I think his lecturing and scolding of the press came off appropriate.  Petino's anger was genuine in that he wasn't trying to deflect but honestly doesn't feel like his life is newsworthy.  Especially worthy of the effort to fabricate stories in the press.  He's right, tell us something that matters!
Really, who cares what Mr. Patino did or does in his spare time.  He was hired to coach a basketball team and he did that, does that very well. He said he was sorry and that should be it.  How he deals with his spouse and family is and should be a very personal matter. Let he who is without sin continue to cast stones at Mr. Patino.
Couldn't disagree more.  He actually appeared to be quite composed.  There was no trainwreck element in it at all.  Think you got this completely wrong.
He does have something right...Lets talk about something else..
Rick Pitino "lost it"?  Well I just watched the video and if that is "losing it"?  Seemed frustrated but basically he was calling the media out on the carpet for calling old news "breaking news" in order to inflame the coverage.
I want to know two things about the whole Pitino-Sypher scandal...How did Sypher come to marry the equipment manager?...Pitino and Sypher supposedly met at Tim Sypher's condo for another tryst a couple of weeks after the first one and for Pitino to hand off the abortion money.  Strange that she would marry Tim Sypher a couple of years later (I believe that there is more to that story)...AND even more strange that a 43 year old woman could get pregnant that easily...once with Pitino 6 years ago and then again at age 45 with Tim Sypher.  There is more to this story and Pitino is probably sweating bullets!
Wow this guy's showing his real side. HE HAD THE AFFAIR !! Take your medicine and shut up...
I am a die hard UK fan... but I have always thought Rick Pitino was a wonderful coach and mentor for young kids. When all of this first broke in Louisville (where I live)people looked at it and thought okay he finally got caught (because it is common knowledge around Louisville that he has cheated before). But when some of her story started coming out we all thought she was off her rocker and didn't believe too much of what she was saying.
But for him to react this way makes me think there must be some truth in there. He has lost any respect I ever had for him. Most of us here in Lousiville would not have paid attention to what was being said on the news, had he not broken through with this press conference.
The University of Louisville needs to do something, he is not only casting a bad light on himself but on the school and sports program as well.
Jimmy from Lexington brings up a point I forgot about...sex on a dining table in a restaurant? With an "aide" present in the next room the entire time? Where the owner of the restaurant tosses Rick the keys and says lock up when you're done? This is NOT a one time deal -- this is a pre-arranged setup, one I'm sure was practiced several times before. The restauranr pal knew this would happen from past experience, and the "aide" was on hand in case Rick needed a backup story.

I would bet a year's salary (a fraction of what Pitino makes) that there are several other women who thought they were a special appetizer on the menu for an evening...
He in no way shape or form "lost" it during that press conference. Was he mad? Yes. This is just more media sensationalism. I guess you win Mike, you got me to respond to you're over sensationalized story. This type of media sensationalism is exactly why I got out of that KU journalsim school you attended as quick as possible. Think God I changed my major. If you call that losing it during a press conference you have not watched sports press conferences for very long.
Any way Go Jayhawks Mike!!!!
I suppose when we've seen press conferences with coaches shouting "Come after me! I'm a man! I'm 40!" or a freakout when someone asks you if you'll make the playoffs, Pitino didn't lose it in the all-out shouting sense.

But he did lose his mind when it came to holding this press conference. Anytime someone invokes Ted Kennedy's death and maintains the press should only listen to what he's said, well ... that guy's lost his stuff a little bit.

If this came off as sensationalistic, well, I guess it's because I expected more from a savvy, smart coach like Pitino.

Then again, I expected him to not be in this situation in the first place.
Pitino is a sad shell of a man, the persona he built over 30 years is shattered. The real Pitino has been exposed as a hypocritical fraud. First he uses 9-1-1 as an excuse, then he uses Ted Kennedy's death as a reason to stop talking about him. He has become the punch line of crude jokes, how sad.
Rick...YOU picked your career in KY.  YOU ARE A BASKETBALL COACH IN KY!!  Hello??  You can't do that s**t and think the media is just going to sit on their hands!  But with your apparent arrogance, I'm sure you thought you could.  You are/were a celebrity here and the MEDIA goes with the territory.  Didn't you learn that at UK??  You really screwed up.  Take it like a man and shut up...geez!  YOU are the one that hurt your family, NOT THE MEDIA!!!  And THEN to bring Senator Kennedy into it??  Seriously???
This interview was a new answer to that age-old question: "How many feet can fit in one mouth?" Talk about OFF-TOPIC, when you look up the definition, this video pops up. Wow Ricky, you really stepped on it.

If you don't want this type of stuff in the media, then DON'T DO IT when you are the head coach of one of the top-10 basketball programs in the nation.
I've always liked Rick, especially when he was our coach at Kentucky and we heard rumors about affairs when he was here, also.  The thing is....he has five children...he's one of the highest profile coaches in the world and after confessing to his transgression, he BLAMES the media for covering it?  There is no way that he could seriously consider that this thing would just go away. Really!  Rick is far too intelligent for that and his "rant" on national television made him look small and very guilty.  I'm afraid he's sealed his fate.
Bruce is right on the money...there is NO freakin way some poor lonly guy (Ricky)accidentally has his first (I'm ashamed to say this...sniffle, sniffle), affair) on a freakin table top with a team ass't. in the next room. PLEASE!!! To pull this off means Ricky/Dicky has been there/done that before. He's a two-faced scumbag caught with them down & now it's everybody else's fault. Every restaurant in Kentucky should put signs in their windows..."Pitino Eats Here". What a jerk!
Rick isn't telling the entire story on this one...he is doing everything in his power to protect the University and his image...my wife is a journalist and the truth will come out, journalist are awesome, I respect how they dig, dig, dig for the truth because eventually those on the defense will always crack once the smokin gun is found and they ask for a comment before print...look at Bill Clinton, SC Govnr, ARod, soon Roger C...hats off to the media.  From coach to a coach Rick P, money & fame will always expose weaknesses and infidelity is an extremely common weakness...Rick just said something to piss this lady off or treated her like trash.  Personally, I think the extortion claim is an out of context statement that Karen Sypher made after Rick disrespected her or pissed her off...I can't wait for the trail on this one...Media, have a frenzy on this one and continue to do your job!
Rick:  How do you achieve "fabrication of the truth?"  Yogi Berra probably wishes he had thought of that one!
