ABOUT THIS BLOG

News, analysis, feature stories, random thoughts... if it's about college basketball, either in season or during the summer doldrums, you'll find it in Beyond the Arc.

Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

The program isn't a zoo, says Binghamton Zoo

The Binghamton basketball, contrary to conventional wisdom and most reasonable assessments, is not a zoo.

So say the folks from the actual Binghamton Zoo.

Not long after Binghamton athletic director Joel Thirer compared the basketball team to a zoo, the zoo’s business manager, Amanda J. Padwa, sent an angry letter to the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin on Tuesday. The complete letter follows.

I am tired of hearing that blight on Binghamton University, the men's basketball team, being referred to as a "zoo." The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has just received re-accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the industry's governing authority. We achieved this status by being in the top 10 percent of all the zoos in the country.

Our animal care, safety, employees and educational and service standards are set high and met accordingly. Not one of our tigers has been arrested with cocaine. No otter knocks over old ladies to shoplift condoms. Our bear doesn't have temper tantrums and storm off his exhibit. You won't find any of our lemurs busted for smoking pot. So, please, stop insulting zoos by comparing those criminals to us.

No word if Amanda is going to start writing for Jay Leno’s show.

Ummm get a life... it was metaphoric you sour puss.
Was it metaphoric or just a good chance for some free publicity?
To be honest, I totally agree with the zoo folks here. I understand that it’s a longtime tradition to compare anything that is disorganized or dysfunctional with a zoo — ie, “My workplace is a zoo”, “Our family is a zoo”. But actually it’s that kind of thing that creates the mistaken image that zoos are bad places. The truth is that most modern zoos are highly-organized, clean, and beautiful places where both animals and their human visitors are well treated.

I live, teach, and coach just an hour away from Binghamton, and have former students attending BU. The basketball program there is a disgrace and all of the area schools have been exposed to horrible role models as athletes. Luckily they still have Hartwick, Cortland and SUC Oneonta as positive ones.....   If given the choice, I too would rather have the Lemur, Bear, and Otter over for dinner with my family and associate with the athletes of my high school than the BU bball players. Glad they cleaned house !!
