Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Sometimes, being MJ's kid ain't easy

I can think of worse things than being Michael Jordan’s son. Unless I wanted to play basketball. Then all bets are off.

Pretty sure that’s what Jeff Jordan is going through.

MJ’s oldest son walked onto the Illinois team two years ago, earned a scholarship, then decided to quit the team last June. He said he wanted to focus on life after basketball, but at some point between June and now, things changed because now he wants to play again.

Why isn’t clear. Why he quit wasn’t clear. Even to Illinois coach Bruce Weber. But, to Weber’s credit, he’ll gonna welcome Jordan back. (And why not? Jeff can play some D.)

“I’ve not had a chance to sit down and visit with him,” Weber told the State Journal-Register (Illinois). “He’s shown some interest. He’s a good, quality kid who worked hard for us for two years.

“He made a decision (to leave), and I’m not totally sure why. It’s tough to be Jeff Jordan in following dad’s footsteps.”

I think that last past sums it up. When it comes to playing hoops, being Michael Jordan’s son is a no-win situation. As much as he tries, Jeff’ll never be his dad.

But sticking with his team and playing hoops as long as he’s able? That’s as cool as it gets.

Duh. With three highly touted freshmen guards coming in
this year, JJ realized that his playing time would be reduced, so time to hang up the sneakers and hit the books. But then after seeing these guys play, he realized Illinois is going to be DY-NO-MITE this year, and he wanted to be part of it, even if he mostly rides the bench.
