Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Carolina will be scary good by March

If one game is any indication, North Carolina’s the team you don’t want to play. And if you have to, do it early.

Check out this lineup:

Ed Davis, 6-10
Deon Thompson, 6-9
Tyler Zeller, 7-0
John Henson, 6-10

Those four forwards are fleet and aggressive. They're capable of disrupting opponents (long arms in passing lanes) and figure to make Carolina a team that's just as imposing on defense as it is on offense.

Tyler Zeller blocks a shot against FIU.

That’s what Roy Williams rolled out Monday, with the results (watch here) as you’d expect.

The Heels breezed past Florida International during Monday’s opener despite committing 26 turnovers, tied for the most ever during Williams’ tenure. Granted, four came when Williams emptied the bench late, but that means the core group was a little sloppy.

“For the most part, I thought we were active. We were trying hard,” Williams said afterward. “We just weren’t very sharp. But it’s what you should expect this time of year.”

It stands to reason that’ll improve as the season wears on, and as Larry Drew II handles the ball more and more. In fact, the more Drew has the ball right now, the better.

His line – 7 points, 6 assists, 1 steals, 2 turnovers – was a promising sign for a team seeking a replacement for Ty Lawson. If Drew keeps his turnovers down and ensures the Heels continue to play fast (84 possessions vs. FIU), they’ll live up to that No. 6 ranking.

Games against Ohio State (Nov. 19), Michigan State (Dec. 1), Kentucky (Dec. 5) and Texas (Dec. 19) will be the biggest tests, but ultimately they’ll just prepare UNC for March.

By then, every D-I team should hope to avoid that monster roster.

Lost an awful lot from last year but good recruiting always and some excellent players back. Not sure about this year's run. Next year even better. Just hoping no one is too good and leaves early.
Are you kidding me?  They gave up 26 turnovers to FIU.  26 TURNOVERS!  Any other legit conference team would have beaten the pants off them.  If anything, last night showed me that they have the potential to be scary BAD, especially come first round in March.
The unadulterated love for the ACC by the sports media continues....
Go Heels...Tru Blu!!!
I am excited to see these youngster grow under Roy's guidance. Just imagine what next season will look like with these same, now with experience, players.
I know they will be in shape but I wonder if the tall lineup can continue with last year's speed of play and lets not forget that Lawson was doing the pushing back then.  Some big shoes to feel from last year but the possibility of a repeat is mos def not out of the question.
If Drew can step up, it's Final Four here we come.Go Heels
Don't forget about the Wear twins.  They are both 6-9, 6-10 coming off the bench!
Mike, I can see your enthusiasm about the UNC front line. have you considered that Duke a mere 8 miles away has Brian Zubek 7'1", Miles & Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelley at 6'10" plus Lance Thomas and Kylse Singler (who will play shooting guard this year) 6'8". Are you trying to tell me that UNC is bigger with longer arms to clog the passing lanes than their closest rival?
Zoubek's never shown himself to be anything other than a stiff and I never saw Miles Plumlee play last season. But I do like the rest of Duke's frontline.

I just didn't see the need to make everything about Duke-North Carolina in a Carolina post.
Eugene Kudrow,

It isn't all about the ACC all of the time, it's about who wins.  UNC are the REIGNING NCAA Champions, give them some respect.  We have to listen to how overrated we are all season, every season, however, we just seem to keep winning championships in the ACC.  I am a Carolina fan thru and thru, however, Duke and Maryland have thrown is some NCAA Championships this decade, so I gice them props. When whatever conference you pull for wins a one, let the bragging begin.  The ACC rules until they get knocked off...period. Go cry somewhere else.  It's so easy to take a swing at the ACC when your conference/team sucks, why don't you just worry about bringing yours up instead of brining ours down. Switch sports if you don't like the ACC, because we aren't going anywhere for a long time!!!

Go HEELS!!!! Go ACC!!!!!!!
Hey Mike Liaudatis,

UCLA > ACC

UCLA has as many championships as your whole conference.  You guys rule....2nd place....
Hey, if you hate the ACC during basketball season, you can get your jolies by watching how badly they play football.
UNC is going to be mediocre this year.  Shawn Bradley will tell you that height alone certainly doesn't make you a player.
With all due respect Mr. Procton, nobody who has seen Ed Davis play would dream of comparing him to Shawn Bradley. I'm not sure about Henson, but Thompson has proven to be a good athlete, Zeller has shown some promise, and this Davis, he looks to be the next big thing.  The article is right - tremendous potential.
The big guy who didn't help much was the tall guy for UNC-Asheville.
Sorry to put up 2 posts, but Bill in Atlanta might want to rephrase just a bit - my paper yesterday had 3 SEC teams ranked in football and 4 from the ACC.
Shawn Bradley played one year of WAC basketball, knocked on doors for two years as a christian missionary then went straight into the NBA without an NBA type body. His NBA stats are not star quality but decent in his strengths. All of these UNC forwards are stronger in build, therre is no comparison.
These comments are indicative of ABC, anybody but Carollina. Yet we have comments about Duke, comparing conferences, an overly tall string bean player from the past. The story is about a team that has won 2 of the last 4 Championsips, has an second to no one coach and a very young team that will have 6-7 NBA players on it. The specifics of this game are irrelevant because the story is about how good they should be in March and maybe April.

So next time you bloggers write about Carolina make sure that you took your ritalin so you can focus, have not consummed to much coffee so you aren't agitated, and take five deep breaths so you can stayed centered in reality. This team has as good a amazing potential and may well win it all in 2010 or 2011.
