Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Arkansas' Clarke beyond an efficient scorer

When Jodie Meeks torched Tennessee for 54 points last season, I figured I’d never see a more efficient performance.

Less than a year later, Arkansas’ Rotnei Clarke blew that to shreds. Note to self: Avoid such statements in the future.

Clarke, a 6-foot sophomore, drilled 13 three-pointers – and SEC record – and finished with 51 points in the Hogs’ 130-68 win against Alcorn State on Friday. It was one of those games where even Clarke came away slightly amazed by his night.

"I just felt like every time I shot it, it was going in," Clarke said. "I guess it was just one of those zones."

No kidding.

His numbers were 15 of 21 from the field, hit 13 of 17 three-pointers and 8 of 9 free throws. That’s a 97.7 eFG% and 2.018 PPWS. For comparison, Meeks was 90.9 eFG% and 1.885 PPWS. Meeks put on his show against much better competition, but still. Those are video game numbers.

Before the season, FOXSports.com’s Jeff Goodman called Clarke’s the nation’s top shooter, notably because ex-Razorbacks coach Stan Heath once saw Clarke hit 25 straight shots from beyond the arc and 94 of 100 overall.

Safe to say, other teams will be checking Clarke. Often.

Alert readers are now checking if Alcorn State is on their team’s schedule. The Braves gave up 100 points and a triple-double to Ohio State last week. Stopping Evan Turner – the game’s best all-around player a future NBA lottery pick – is one thing. But how could they not double-team Clarke? Arkansas suspended five players before Friday’s game, so it wasn’t like the Hogs had many options.

"The way he was shooting the 3s, I don't see how you can possibly lose him," Alcorn State coach Larry Smith said. "We failed to get him covered."

What’s Kansas going to do to them?

He won't score more than 21 agains the Cards Tues Night...you heard it hear 1st
Not a very valid comparison between University of Kentucky's Jodie Meeks' competition (Tennessee of the SEC on the Vols' home court) versus Turner against mighty Alcorn State of the SWAC on the Razorbacks' home floor.
Who could not shoot the ball better against a team  with a 1-2 record who had given up 100 points twice  and whose leading scorer against Arkansas was a 6-2 freshman with 15 points?
Alcorn is playing  15 of its first 16 games on the road. Arkansas is obviously one of numerous "money" games on the Braves' schedule in order to boost the ASU's athletic coffers.
Sometimes when you just go ga-ga over numbers you should really check out the reasons before proclaiming Turner the next NBA superstar. Let's see how he does against SEC competition before you start putting him into the lottery.  More significantly, let's see how many Turner torches UK with Jan. 23 when the Razorbacks play in Rupp Arena.
If Turner surpasses Meeks' 54 in that environment, you can try become his agent. Otherwise, he's a good shooter who had a great night against an obviously inferior opponent.
Safe to say all the other creditable coaches and scouts already know about Taylor...but not because of the reasons you suggest because they know the difference between a Tennessee and an Alcorn State.
Samual, statiscally speaking, Clarke -- not Turner, as I assume you're referring to Ohio State's Evan Turner, who is by all accounts set to be an NBA lottery pick -- did have a more efficient shooting night than Jodie Meeks last season.

I don't think it was better, nor did I say it was better. But it did deserve a shout out for how remarkable his night was. Don't turn it into a "this guy ripped on Kentucky" thing.
Oops...you are correct Mike,I meant Clarke not Turner in my earlier post
Nevertheless, Clarke probably won't pass Meeks' effort with the SEC schedule he faces unless he gets to go one on one against somebody. Alcorn State has five players on their roster 6-7 or 6-8. That's a guard in the SEC, but the mystery is why a couple of them were not on Clarke most of the second half on Nov. 13.
Nevertheless, as I said earlier, let's look at what Clarke does with his efficiency Jan. 23 with Arkansas at Kentucky for a better apples to apples opportunity!
That would be a real shout out comparison if anyone is still remembering Jodie Meeks' 54 by then.
It don't matter because Clarke could barely get off a shot last night due to the Cards suffocating D. Clarke had his outburst against Alcorn St...enough said. Until he can get his shots off against quality opponents he doesn't deserve the hype.
