Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Wall wows in opener -- thanks to final shot

John Wall’s Kentucky debut wasn’t perfect. It just had a storybook ending.

And that’s what Big Blue Nation wants, especially when March rolls around. For now, they can relish a win that probably wouldn’t have happened the last few years.

The No. 4 Wildcats spent most of Monday trailing Miami (Ohio) and failing to guard Nick Winbush, who hit 8 of 10 from beyond the arc. At one point, the ‘Cats trailed by 18. John Calipari’s freshmen weren’t dogging it, it’s just that the RedHawks played that well. They disrupted Kentucky’s dribble-drive offense for most of the night, clogging the lanes and forcing UK into perimeter shots.

Wall rarely forced the issue (5 assists, 5 turnovers), but wasn’t shy about driving by defenders when necessary. During the first half, he drew fouls on three Miami players in a 22-second span. As a result, he did most of his scoring from the free-throw line, hitting 10 of 14 from the stripe, bit only attempted nine field-goal attempts.

Yet when the RedHawks tied the game at 70 with six seconds left, Calipari wasn’t worried. Wall took the inbounds, scooted down the court and nailed pure a 15-footer with .5 seconds remaining. Watch for yourself.

“When it hit the bottom of the net, it was a relief, a great feeling,” Wall said.

That goes for every Kentucky fan. The Wildcats are a work in progress (like North Carolina and a handful of other young teams), which means this won’t be the last tight game Cal’s crew has. And they won’t all turn out like this.

But having a player like Wall – a freshman who belies his class standing – gives them someone who can win those games. It’s music to Kentucky’s ears.

well when you do not contest a shot, theyre going to take it, those men from miami(oh) can really shoot. Any team including Kentucky and Kansas have to get in an under-rated team's face. Both deams are better than that, Kentucky got back in the game because they are a VERY good team, and can take control. Yes they have many weakness, I think they are going to work the kinks out, stupid foul, turnovers, playing better defense, are mistakes a young team has to work on. #4? They'll live up to that. And as far as Kansas is concerned, any team can beat any other team at this point in the season, it happens all the time doesn't it? Remember Missouri? So don't be nasty Kansas, you'll get yours too.
Something tells me John Calipari isn't going to cakewalk every year like he did in Conference USA.

Clutch shot by Wall though.
Did I miss the nasty KU fan comment? Kansas fans understand that they can lose any one game (see Texas Tech), but they at least have a Sweet Sixteen and all returning starters as an indication that any such losses are the exception.  Sorry Kentucky, the basketball nation has every right to doubt and wonder if the hype is for real until the cats prove they're legit.  Do get me wrong, tons of talent and probably will prove themselves by the end of the year- just haven't yet.
Most over-rated team in decades. You don't go from NIT semi-final team (didn't even win it) to #4 in the country under a new coach with a new system. #1 recruiting class can't propel you that far. The Fab 5 at Michigan was 3 times better than this Frosh class and they didn't even win it all. Heartbreak Hotel awaits the kitten fans this year.
I thought Kentucky was supposed to be this great team. All the hype. M-Ohio deserved that game. It will be a sad day when the Tar Heels come to town and beat the Wildcats yet again.
Go Cats!
