Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

'How did it get away from me?!'

If there’s a spot on those ubiquitous Coors Light commercials for college basketball coaches, Charlie Coles just earned himself a spot.

Miami of Ohio’s coach was answering questions after his team’s 72-70 loss to No. 4 Kentucky Monday night – in which his RedHawks played marvelously – when someone asked him how the game got away from Miami.

Context: The RedHawks led UK by 18 at one point, but that was in the first half. They played the Wildcats – flush with one of the best recruiting classes of all time – even throughout until John Wall hit the game-winner.

Coles’ reaction? Classic mix of indignation, restraint and humor, worthy of Lefty Driesell. See for yourself.

That interview was like having a local news reporter as someone who just won a $100 million dollar lottery,   "will this change your life style?" and Your answer.. will be "DUH.. but I will be $30,000 broker since I will pay to send you back to journalism school"   Some reporters are dumber than ______ fill in the blank
Until I heard this coach's response, I had never heard of him.  But now.....he has a new fan whether he wants one or not.  What a classy response to an inane question.  Good luck the rest of the way, coach Coles.
Go Charlie!!!
instant classic!!! Go coach Coles im on your bandwagon!
Love this guy!  Honest, funny, calm, human.
That was a long time coming!  We need more like that.  I do remember a few years ago the football coach from Michigan, while going to locker room at half time, was asked the same type question. His response to the young lady interviewing on TV was also,, "What a dumb question.  Weren't you watching the game being played out there"?  He continued to question her on asking such a ridiculous question.
It is a perfect example of a reporter who thinks he has to ask a question hopeing he can get his three seconds of TV air time to show his face.
He should have stopped with "How did it get away from me?! That might be the stupidest question I've ever been asked." The rest was incoherent rambling.
Where do I find his reaction?
As a Big Blue fan, I remember coach Coles from previous meetings with Miami.  I always thought he was one of the good guys in college sports, and this just confirms it.  What a classic response to a typical moronic question from a sports writer. They got no breaks with any calls, and played a helluva game.  A classy guy.  I hope they win the rest of their games. You made more than a few fans here in Lexington.
I'm a UK fan and have seen this about 10 times and I laugh everytime I see it. What a classy guy and what a classy way to handle such a question from Journalism 101. In fact, I bet the entire BBN is a fan of this man now. Good luck Charlie, you have a great shotting team.
Coach Coles you are way to kind. What composure in the face of stupidity. That reporter should thank their lucky stars Coach Knight or Parcells wasn't answering that question. Good luck the rest of the season
I know the reporter and he asked a typical open-ended question that is asked all the time. These guys just don't want coaches to grunt Yes or No. They want good talking head video and audio...and BOY did he get it!!! Great answer. They shook hands afterward.
This guy is the greatest! What a classic way of pointing out what moron that reporter is, without appearing like a jerk himself Coach, you are my hero!
Awesome response!
I don't think anybody that has been exposed to Charlie was surprised by this. This is classic Charlie. Miami is my school's (Ohio) biggest rival and he is revered by us. A Marshall player's girlfriend was injured in an automobile accident a few years ago and he stopped by the hospital to see her without prompting or fanfare. Nobody from Marshall (or Miami for that matter) knew he was going to do it. He is just a really good guy.
