Mike Miller

Mike Miller has been NBCSports.com's college basketball editor since 2003. It's a position he relishes; no wonder considering he transferred to Kansas to watch Paul Pierce play. Most of his favorite sports memories involve college hoops, usually during March, when every waking moment is spent thinking about March Madness.

Calipari's had it up to here with bad 'D'

Kentucky’s defense – or lack of – is killing John Calipari.

Three days after watching Miami of Ohio’s Nick Winbush hit 8 of 10 from beyond the arc and escaping thanks to John Wall’s late heroics, it was more of the same for the Wildcats against Sam Houston State on Thursday. Corey Allmond made 11 of 16 from deep and finished with 37, a Rupp Arena record. Kentucky still eked out a 102-92 victory, but it didn’t sit well with Calipari.

John Calipari gives his team directions.

“If we don’t do better defensively folks, we are in trouble,” he said afterward. “Do you think we can score 100 against everybody? Because we’re going to have to. They are going to score 100 against us.”

Threes were the biggest problem by far. The Bearkats were 18 of 38 beyond the arc. Their 49.4 eFG% wasn’t that impressive, but was enough to irritate Calipari, whose team was sloppy (22 turnovers on 83 possessions? ouch) and did whatever it wanted on offense.

But that’s apparently all the ‘Cats care about.

"Our execution stinks right now," Calipari said. "It stinks because everybody's trying to get theirs."

The Lexington Herald-Leader has more along those lines, including video. It’s worth a listen to hear how exasperated he is.

"We need to get a little better rhythm. Our rhythm stinks right now,” Calipari said. “In other words, we race it up, that means shoot it fast. No! You race it up to try to put pressure on (the defense). So they all get in the lane, you pass, pass (to get an uncontested shot)."

The silver lining for Big Blue Nation is that the players realize they have to get better.

“Sometimes we didn’t bring it a lot on the defensive end and other times we just messed up on a lack of communication,” Daris Miller said. “We didn’t play how we wanted to.”

I know what practice is going to focus on the next few days…

Calipari's lack of ethics and accountability is killing the rest of us.  Coaches should not be able to escape the sanctions that occurred under their watch.  Calipari is a master of moving onward and upward with his cloud intact.
Yep, Kentucky sucks. Go Cards!
good reporting-somehow Coach Calapari will get them playng heads up basketball-he correct "run&gun" will not make a successful season-think defense-but not Iba style
Ahhh.....such a relief to see Coach Cal fuming in Rupp Arena and not at the FedEx Forum...home of the Memphis Tigers.   Life is sweeter with you in KY!  Thanks!
M Duvall head back to your South end crib with those filthy Cards. Little brother is going to take a whopping on Jan. 2nd!
All these whiners from Memphis, Louisville, and St Paul- I wonder why you are always reading articles on Kentucky basketball. Go figure! Anyone in St. Paul wouldn't know what basketball looks like; Louisville has the little brother complex; and Memphis, who begged and pleaded, even tried to bribe Coach Cal to stay is suddenly so glad life is sweeter without him. Why don't you all try to work up some interest in your own sorry programs and stop scurring to find an article on Kentucky to read and jealously comment negatively about! I guess jealousy likes company!!
I wish the UK Wildcats the best of seasons. But I do  believe it will improve defensively real soon. Future opponents will explore the 3 point shot big time. To think that three freshmen have had 20+ points games in the first three games has to be encouraging.
John Calipari has so much band karma following him, it's bound to rear its head somehow.  Bad defense?  Sounds good to me.
Here is why Kentucky isn't a great, respected program.  Do you think that the fan bases at UCLA, Carolina or Duke would tolerate such a scuz-bucket being hired as coach?  Easy answer:  HECK NO!
Kentucky fans are far too proud of this slimeball.  They are all blindly following him which is why he the reason that he is allowed to just walk away from his filthy past.  Kentucky fans are the only ones who have forgotten who he is.  He is the definition of disrespect to the game and he will only tarnish the program and leave it worse than when he came, assuming that is possible.  So keep defending him, and it will be you who will be jealously reading the jayhawk championship articles when your team struggles to find the NIT once Cal does his dirty deeds and splits on you next.  I cant wait to chat with you then.
Can you feel the hatred yet? Isn't it great Big Blue Fans? I love it. I haven't felt this much hate and criticism since Pitino was here. We all know with high expectations and legitimate talent comes the jealous haters. This only re-affirms the fact that we're on our way back to the pinnacle of college basketball again. Thank you all for this feel good moment. You naysayers are what makes the game great!
Good to see the UNC and KU haters out today. TO label Cal a slimeball is ironic given the fact that Cal has been cleared of any personal knowledge or involvement of any misdeeds unlike Saint Roy who knowing violated NCAA rules while at Kansas. Here is the KU press release acknowledging that fact. http://www2.kusports.com/news/2006/oct/12/press_release_ncaa_committee_infractions_penalizes/
UCLA of course had Sam Gilbert who funded all of Woodens teams, and Finally Duke had Corey Maggette who admitted taking payments from Myron Piggie. http://www.nytimes.com/2000/07/12/sports/plus-basketball-maggette-admits-taking-payments.html?n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/Organizations/N/National%20Collegiate%20Athletic%20Assn
The point is that there is enough blame to go all around in college basketball, and that people that live in glass houses should not be tossing stones.
The point t
the big problem I see with defense are all the super stars who are not use to playing defense in high school. also, they are freshman. this should be corrected by january. I see several top 20 teams that could beat them today. that will change.reason for so many turnovers, tired at end of game. that will continue unless cal. plays more players off bench to give rest.
I'm a UConn fan.Everyone in New England hates this guy because of what happened at UMass.I honestly feel bad for Kentucky fans. You might have some success with him as coach but in the end he'll screw you.I hope we have a good game in a couple weeks from now.See you then.
UCLA, Duke and UNC not scuzbags? Can I just say...Jim Harrick, Corey Maggette and Roy W. leaving Kansas on probation (for gifting players)...get over yourself. Kentucky's defense looked just fine on Saturday and they had 22 blocked shots in 2 games. Not bad for 3 freshman and a sophmore starter.
