UK
2. UNC
3. KU
4. UCLA
5. Indiana
6. Duke

History, winning, consistent winning are my top considerations. KU is #1 in history and impact. Ever hear of James Naismith, Phog Allen, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, Wilt Chamberlain? The list is long, as KU has more HOF inductees than any school. KU is in a virtual tie with UNC in all-time victories, with UK slightly ahead. KU has been to a Final Four in every decade (not including the inaugural 1939 season) except the '60s (JoJo White's shot at the buzzer in 1966's Elite Eight should have counted!). KU only has 3 NCAA Championships, though (plus 2 Helms Championships in the '20s).

In my opinion, UCLA shouldn't even be in the discussion for #1. They had one period of dominance, under suspect circumstances. At any rate, they are a relative blip on the screen outside of this period.

If you're looking for college basketball royalty, look no further than KU, UK and UNC.

The greatest programs: No. 7, Louisville

I just wish Louisville could have competed in the SEC like UK for all those years.I think they would have close to 2000 wins also. My point is UK piled up win after win after win against inferior competition. The SEC's a football league. Also UK, Kansas, and I think UNC all have like a 10 year head start on Louisville. Two things to seriously take into account.

The greatest programs: No. 7, Louisville

To clear something up with what Mr. Dante Marshall wrote. Kentucky piled up win and win against "inferior competition" in an "inferior league"...and Louisville would have piled on win after win.

Need I remind Mr. Marshall what basketball leagues Louisville has played in during the college basketball tenure? Missouri Valley? Metro? Conference USA? Shouldn't Louisville piled on alot more victories being in those "powerhouse" conferences?

One serious thing to take into account.

Another serious thing to take into account. All times wins aren't what you look at Mr. Marshall. You look at WINNING PCT. Compare those two please.

And if whinning about Kentucky (and for that matter any other school having a "head start"), Louisville (the college) was actually founded before (the college) Kentucky.

Their fault they couldn't get a team in gear.

Your two serious things...fail.

The greatest programs: No. 7, Louisville

This is an appropriate ranking for Louisville. We are definitely top ten but not in the top five. As a Louisville fan they are number one in my heart but there are programs that are much more deserving of a higher ranking. My only question about this list has nothing to do with Louisville but why is Western Ky University not listed in the top 25?
